After 35 years of Christian devotion, I had a major “mid-life crisis” at age 48 and decided to use a “zero-based budgeting” approach to my faith and assumptions about the nature of the world. I spent 20 years reading widely in many fields including cosmology, astronomy, evolution, creationism, religions, cultures, physics, and many more. At the end of that research I decided I wanted to leave something to the world as an alternative to the various “scriptures” (which I’d read) used by the world’s religions. I realized that the best predictor of a person’s religion was where they were born, that the various scriptures were very much regional not global in scope, and that everywhere defenseless children were being taught/programmed by their caregivers. William Glasser in his book Choice Theory describes three universal VABEs that parents worldwide hold: 1. I know what’s right for my children, 2. I have a right/sacred responsibility to teach my children what’s right, and 3. I have a right/sacred responsibility to punish my children if they don’t do what’s right for them.
As a result of my research, I wrote A Song of Humanity: a science-based alternative to the world’s scriptures (ASOH) as a conversation between parent and child about stars, earthquakes, air, water, families, the nature of the universe and many other topics. ASOH is structured in book, chapter, verse for easy reference. Each chapter ends with questions like “So my child, what do you think about that?” rather than dogma. An early draft reader said that her young daughter wanted her parents to read from ASOH instead of their usual bedtime fare–and that she wanted pictures, so i asked my artist son to create ~50 images of various things like Tiktaalik, the first beast to leave the seas and live on land. Perhaps you’ll have a similar experience reading to your children about the stars and where they came from. To do so, you’ll have to challenge some of the VABEs your parents taught you. Can you do that?
