WELCOME to the L3L domain! Here we explain why people behave the way they do and how to lead them. Most leaders operate at Level 1 or Level 2. Effective leaders work at Level 3.
LEVEL THREE LEADERSHIP refers to three levels of human behavior. Level 1 is visible behavior what you can capture on film, the things people say and do. Level 2 is Conscious Thought. We think, we know we think, and we choose not to reveal all we think at L1. Sometimes there are “leaks” from L2 to L1 in a sigh, a frown, or a shrug. Level 3 refers to our semi-conscious Values, Assumptions, Beliefs, and Expectations about the way the world is or should be. (VABEs for short) We begin learning these at birth from our caregivers.
Daniel Kahneman got a Nobel Prize for the idea that most people trust their VABEs OVER reliable evidence–which underscores the importance of leading/working at Level 3.
This site summarizes my life’s work investigating how people lead most effectively, how people find career success, and how to teach effectively. In the end, VABEs have been the basis for almost all human decisions. So, I say, “It’s ALL about VABEs.”
